MOTIVATION

Motivation is the process of initiating action in an individual or group of individuals to direct behavior toward certain goals activating and maintaining this behavior. When we ask what motivates this behavior, we usually mean why do they behave as they do? In other words, motivation as populary used, refers to the cause or why of behavior. It has to do with the state of the person or persons.

Speaking of the state of motivation, we infer the basic cause which move or activate us. We never observe these causes directly but note the motives such as an example might be a student that works hard at almost every task that comes to him/her in order to achieve their goal.

What is the force that drives one to accomplish these goals? They are (1) need, (2) motive, (3) goal, (4) instinct, and (5) desire.

(1). need- a condition of lack or deficit of something required which is needed to maintain an existing balance. Example- need for water, food, air, sleep, sex.

(2). motive- directs the activity toward a goal. Example- if you are deprived of food for 24 hours, and when provided food, you rush because you are motivated by hunger.

(3). goal- a goal is something that you think will contribute to the satisfaction of a need or motive. Example-If hunger is a need, eating food is a goal.

(4). instict- an innate biological force that predisposes us to act in a certain way. Example- fighting, repulsion, curiosity, self-abasement, acquisition etc.

(5). desire- strong feelings which denotes what one wants to have.
